The Lagos State Police Command has explained why Afrobeat star Seun Kuti was detained.
Recall that Kuti was handcuffed and transported to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID, in Panti for further investigation and possibly prosecution.
Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, had ordered his arrest after he was seen on film beating a police officer in uniform on the 3rd Mainland Bridge.
Some Nigerians had berated the police for putting him in handcuffs despite that he voluntarily surrendered himself.
A concerned Nigerian on Twitter asked the Nigeria Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, if the handcuff was necessary.
But the Police said it was standard procedure.
@Ajinomoto wrote: “Was the handcuff necessary and why collect his shoe? NPF sha”.
Adejobi responded, “It seems you are not familiar with detention. With this question. Anyway, it’s a normal procedure before detention.”
