Senator Ned Nwoko’s bill to allow civilians to carry firearms for self-defense has sparked debate on social media.

Nwoko stated in an interview with Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Thursday that the bill will allow Nigerians to defend themselves against kidnappers, bandits, and armed robbers.

The 63-year-old lawmaker said the police is not adequately funded and is under-staffed hence the need for civilians to be allowed to carry arms.

According to him, it is included in the bill that those who intend to own guns must get medical fitness certification, must have clean criminal records, must obtain passes from traditional rulers in their domains, and go through a shooting school among other requirements.
