Safiya Yusuf, a Kannywood actress, recalled how she avoided the public eye after her nude video leaked in 2020.
In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, the 21-year-old said the incident was the most depressing time of her life because she spent three months indoors, and when she finally found the courage to face the world, she was stoned by a specific person.
She said: “That period was the most depressing time of my life because I spent three months without nearing the gate of my house, I was indoors. And by the time I mustered the energy to go out, people abused me on the road, in fact, one particular person stoned me.”
In addition, the actress thanked her parents and other family members for sticking by her despite the scandal. Safiya also stated that she was not barred from Kannywood and that she simply took a break.
Safiya, also known as Safara’u, is well-known for her role in Arewa24’s popular TV series Kwana Casa’in.
However, it was unfortunate that the young actress’s nude video was leaked and went viral. The leaked video was said to be the main reason she lost her role in the TV series, despite several attempts by the actress and other artists close to her to resolve the issue.
Not to be deterred from continuing her career as an entertainer, the actress became very active on social media and later turned to singing as a new career.
In her song ‘Kwalelenka,’ she stated that she has abandoned Kannywood for singing, while referring to the Hausa filmmaking industry as “Sana’ar Yan Wahala,” which translates as “a fruitless labouring ground.”
