Nollywood actress Damilola Adegbite has shared a deeply personal account of her early life in Lagos, disclosing that her family ranked as the poorest on their street in Surulere. In a recent interview, the star explained how she still projected an image of elegance and confidence that left outsiders assuming she came from serious money.
“We’re the poorest family on my street in Surulere, but if you saw me stepping out of our house, you would never have guessed my background unless I told you.”
Adegbite traced her distinctive poise back to childhood evenings spent watching films with her father, particularly the James Bond series. She studied the characters closely and began imitating their posture, speech, and walk long before she understood what she was doing.
“From a very young age, I carried myself differently… I would study how the characters spoke, sat, and walked. I practiced their confidence without even realizing it.”
She also admitted to sneaking into her mother’s room to experiment with clothes and makeup, quietly rehearsing the sophisticated woman she hoped to become one day.
That early preparation proved decisive years later at a high-stakes MNet Africa audition. More than 10,000 women competed for a spot, and Adegbite was the final person selected. She learned she had edged out the rest because she pronounced just one word correctly during her presentation.
Looking back, she said:
“That moment changed everything.”
Now established in the industry, Adegbite reflected on the non-linear path to success and the importance of guarding one’s energy. She noted that protecting personal space and peace can sometimes draw criticism from others.
“Becoming who you dream of being is not a straight journey… Sometimes, you even have to be selfish. When you protect your space and your peace, people may call you rude… but often you are simply protecting yourself.”
She urged young people to pause and identify what has always set them apart. For her, those qualities are courage and presence.
“For me, it’s my courage and presence… Take time to identify what has always worked for you.”
