The family of late Afrobeats singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has scored a major breakthrough in its long fight for answers nearly three years after his death. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has approved their petition for a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 27-year-old’s passing on September 12, 2023.

Lawyer Oladayo Ogungbe revealed the development in a statement dated September 29, 2026. He explained that the Aloba family submitted the petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026. It was received at Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7. The petition highlighted concerns over inconsistencies in the earlier investigation and specifically requested a full forensic reconstruction of the events leading to Mohbad’s death.

Following the approval, the IGP directed that the matter be forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command. Officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau have now taken charge of the fresh probe. A representative of the Aloba family has already been invited and has begun discussions with the new investigative team.

The family was careful to clarify that this police process stands separate from a recent Federal High Court case in Abuja. That suit, filed by a non-governmental organisation and seeking to compel a reopening of the investigation, was dismissed on September 25, 2026. The Aloba family stressed that their petition to the IGP was independent and continues regardless of the court’s decision.

In the statement, Ogungbe noted that the family remains fully cooperative. They are ready to supply documents, witnesses and any other materials that could help the new team. He urged the police to handle the matter with diligence, independence and professionalism. The lawyer closed with a clear message:

“The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues.”

Mohbad’s death in 2023 triggered widespread public outrage, an autopsy after his body was exhumed, and earlier police inquiries that left many questions unresolved. The latest move by the family and the IGP’s approval have once again placed the case in the spotlight as Nigerians wait to see what the Special Enquiry Bureau will uncover.
