Nigerian celebrity boxing turned into something nobody quite planned for. What started as a gimmick, a way for rappers and actors to settle beefs with gloves instead of lawyers, has become a recurring event where the real drama happens before anyone throws a punch. Over three years, Chaos in the Ring has grown into this strange machine for turning old grudges into main events. Money disputes, songwriting credits, bruised egos, all of it gets packaged as sport.
Portable is the story’s biggest character. He has won belts, lost belts, accused opponents of rigging and witchcraft and things that don’t have names. But the spectacle didn’t stop with him. What follows is the history of celebrity boxing in Nigeria. It’s a record of grudges, revenge, redemption, and the small moments that decide who gets to claim victory.

Portable vs Charles Okocha I, December 2023
The feud that later became “Unfinished Business” began as a money fight. In late 2023 Portable accused Charles Okocha of keeping the bulk of a ₦40 million endorsement while sending him only a fraction of what he said was his ₦20 million share. Okocha denied a rip-off, said no contract was signed, and insisted he had transferred ₦5 million after inviting the singer to perform because he “wanted to help a brother.” They took the argument to Landmark Beach, Oniru, in the early hours of Boxing Day week, in a Heritage Boxing Entertainment bout that started after 1am and ran about 40 minutes across four rounds. Portable, in blue, pressed from the first bell. Okocha, in red, landed enough to floor him once before the singer climbed back up. After the fourth round both men refused a fifth, and officials handed Portable the belt. Okocha called it a robbery.
“How do you take off your gloves on the 3rd round that’s total disqualification when the fight hasn’t ended. Y’all know this was rigged plus an incompetent referee that knows nothing about boxing rules. Rematch soon.”
Portable refused to give the strap back.
“You want another beating? You who weighs more than I do, I beat you and collected money and belt. First round I beat you, second round I beat you, third round and fourth round, I beat you. Go and fight another person. If you want to fight, go and call Anthony Joshua. I am not dropping this belt.”
That unresolved grievance sat on ice until July 31, 2026.
Portable vs Speed Darlington, April 2025
The first big Chaos in the Ring chapter that still hangs over the current card was Portable against Speed Darlington at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Lagos in April 2025. The spark was money. Speed Darlington had offered Portable ₦500,000 to perform. Portable treated the fee as an insult. They settled it with gloves.
Portable overwhelmed him early. Darlington could not continue after the opening-round pounding and a dislocated shoulder, and the referee awarded Portable a technical knockout. The loser left in an ambulance and immediately reached for the supernatural.
“I don’t know what happened. Whether it was juju Portable came with. I wasn’t tired, my shoulder just dislocated,” he said.
He later added that the money pain cut deeper than the injury.
“The thing that pains me now is all the money they’ll give Portable, when I want to build swimming pool in my village. It pains me. I should’ve done my own juju.”
Portable did not deny the charge. He leaned into it.
“He is saying I used juju. Yes, it was juju, go and find your own juju.”
Burna Boy later gifted him ₦20 million for the win. That night made Portable the two-belt king of celebrity boxing, sitting on earlier decision glory over Charles Okocha from December 2023.
Carter Efe vs Portable, May 1, 2026
The crown lasted until May 1, 2026, at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island. Content creator Carter Efe, born Oderhohwo Joseph Efe, met Portable after weeks of threats. Portable promised a third belt.
“I will use you to collect my third belt. Charles Okocha was bigger than you, Speed Darlington was bigger than you, and I beat them. I will beat you now.”
Efe’s reply was shorter.
“One punch and you fall.”
The three-round catchweight bout was messy and loud, exactly as advertised. Portable swung wild and clinched. Efe used height, reach and cleaner combinations. All three judges scored it 30-27 for Efe. Businessman Emeka “E-Money” Okonkwo paid the promised ₦50 million on the spot. “You know we put our money where our mouth is. Congratulations Carter on your win. N50 million for you.” Efe later rebranded himself in public.
“I’m feeling like an international world star. My name is Carter Mayweather.”
Portable refused the result. He alleged the night was arranged so organisers would not pay out bets stacked on him.
“It was cheating. They couldn’t pay the money, so they rigged it. They couldn’t pay the N23 billion that people bet on me. If Portable wins, they can never pay the money.”
Portable vs Charles Okocha II, July 31, 2026
Three years later the rematch finally arrived at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, billed as “Unfinished Business.” Promoter Ezekiel Adamu said Okocha had triggered a rematch clause after the 2023 Landmark Beach loss after spending three years calling the Landmark Beach decision unfair. At the press conference he promised violence.
“Let me tell you something, I will kill you in the ring. I am fearless. Everyone knows the first one was not a real fight, but this time it is the real deal.”
Portable answered in kind.
“You that I have beaten before, I will break your bones.”
Chairs flew before fight night even arrived
.On July 31 at the Balmoral Convention Centre, the boxing lasted minutes. The pair wrestled to the canvas. Officials and security poured in. Portable then left the ring. He later returned, but the decision was already gone. Okocha won by disqualification after Portable abandoned the contest. The host put it plainly.
“Because Portable abandoned the ring after the first round, we have a winner, Mr Algorithm, Charles.”
Portable’s excuse the next day was bite marks and choking.
“Charles Okocha bit me, number one. He choked my neck. That’s why I said I wasn’t fighting again. I’m big! I’m bigger than the money! I’m a star!”
He also said he had dressed for a one-round finish.
“I wore a one-round cloth to the bout. I wanted to beat him in round one.”
The official result did not care. The actor finally had the revenge he had demanded.
Mr Real vs Idowest, July 31, 2026
The same card produced the night’s cleanest scrap and its messiest verdict. Mr Real and Idowest dragged their 2018 street anthem Legbegbe into four rounds after Idowest claimed the song on Carter Efe’s livestream.
“I am the original owner of ‘Legbegbe.’ I composed the full song. I only featured Mr Real on the track as my boy in the hood but now he’s claiming the song. He is an old man, I will beat him up.”
Mr Real fired back.
“Idowest, I heard everything you said on Carter Efe’s live. You said you will beat me in a match. I am your senior brother and I will beat you.”
He also accused Idowest of claiming “my song, ‘Legbegbe.’”
Unlike Portable’s wrestling, they boxed. Idowest pressed early. Mr Real finished stronger. The judges called a split-decision draw. Idowest rejected it, insisting he had been the more lethal man. Promoters immediately started talking rematch. Ownership of Legbegbe is still an argument. The scorecards did not settle it.
Small Doctor’s vs Jigan Baba Oja
Not every celebrity who throws punches has headlined Balmoral. Singer Small Doctor has trained at the Police College in Ikeja and treats the sport as more than content.
“Boxing is my life. I am boxing,” he once told PUNCH.
He also spent time in Carter Efe’s camp before the Portable fight, drilling the jab work that showed up on May 1. Fans have pushed a Portable versus Small Doctor street-pop war for more than a year.
There is also the informal 2023 street exhibition with comic actor Jigan Baba Oja, filmed under headlights as both men traded punches in gloves. After Carter Efe beat Portable, Jigan claimed he pioneered entertainment boxing in Nigeria and said disability had stopped him from cashing in.
“If I were to have two complete legs with my boxing experience, I would incapacitate Portable and Carter Efe.”
October 1, 2026: women take the main event
Independence Day now belongs to two pending fights at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, live on DAZN and SuperSport.
Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing and BBNaija star Phyna will headline the first female Chaos in the Ring main event after an Instagram feud over Phyna’s online confrontations and a stalled movie conversation. Promoters framed it as a dare.
“Plot twist? Let’s see what the women can do. Phyna VS Nkechi, the rivalry is real. Now, let’s see who backs it up when the bell rings.”
Nkechi posted the poster with a warning.
“It has burst. You don’t want to go this route with me. Put your money on me because the odds are sure. I don’t want to talk too much till October 1st.”
On September 24 they appeared on The Morayo Show to sell the card and had to be separated after the argument turned physical.
Carter Efe vs Speed Darlington, October 1, 2026
Carter Efe puts the celebrity belt on the line on Independence Day against the man Portable stopped in 2025. The bout is booked for October 1, 2026 at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, live on DAZN as part of Chaos in the Ring. It is the first time Efe and Speed Darlington meet in the ring.
The booking grew out of noise after Efe beat Portable. Speed Darlington presented himself as a different test and accepted the challenge in public.
“Challenge accepted. I’m ready to face Carter Efe in a boxing match on October 1st, 2026.”
Promoter Ezekiel Adamu said Carter asked for the fight.
“Carter fought already with Portable so Carter already is the champion. He has a rematch clause. And Carter said Speed Darlington has been on his case. So he wants to work on Speed so we granted that and we called Speed who agreed to the fight as well. And now we have a fight.”
The September press conference in Ikeja was already a preview. Carter questioned Speed’s age and promised a knockout. Speed answered in character.
“I’m 170 years old. I’m going to beat you.”
Balmoral sold the pairing without apology.
“IT’S OFFICIAL! CARTER VS SPEED. Two African stars. One ring. No excuses. On October 1, the ring decides who stands tall. Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos. Live on @daznboxing. This isn’t just a fight. It is CHAOS!”
For Efe, it is a title defence. For Speed, it is redemption after the juju alibi and the ambulance ride. The result is still pending.
