Gunfire erupted outside the Ataoja of Osogbo’s palace on Wednesday, leaving one person dead after a confrontation involving Afrobeats star Davido’s security team and suspected thugs.
The incident occurred during a courtesy visit by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle, to the monarch’s palace in the Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo. Davido had accompanied the governor after the latter collected his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the Osun State Police Command, the clash started when a known political thug identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly called “Small Rugged,” attempted to gain access to Davido. The singer’s security details resisted him.
DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the state police spokesperson, explained:
“The shooting started after a known political thug, Adebayo Taoreed, popularly called ‘Small Rugged’, was resisted by Davido’s security details after attempting to gain access to the Afrobeats star. The incident attracted more of his cult gang members who attempted to override the security detail which led to gun exchange. The thugs temporarily blocked the palace entrance but were overpowered by the security details before the convoy left the scene with Davido.”
Police described Taoreed as an ex-convict and alleged member of a cult group. The governor’s security team responded by firing into the air and deploying tear gas to disperse the group, allowing the convoy to depart safely.
A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was later shot in the Ita-Olokan area and died from his injuries. Authorities said the suspected gang members allegedly carried out the shooting after leaving the palace vicinity. An investigation has commenced, with resources deployed to apprehend those involved.Davido reacted to reports of the incident on X, distancing himself and the governor from the violence.
“It was a fight outside the palace that had nothing to do with us! The people love excellency!” he posted.
The episode has heightened concerns about security around high-profile political and entertainment figures in the state following the recent governorship election.
