Controversial media personality Daddy Freeze has stirred fresh controversy after criticising the atmosphere at the Service of Songs for the late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, particularly slamming gospel singer Mercy Chinwo’s performance.

In a detailed livestream, Daddy Freeze expressed disappointment over the tone of the event, revealing he walked out when the energy became too celebratory for his liking.

“While we were seated, Nathaniel Bassey came up and blew the trumpet… Later on, Mercy Chinwo climbed the stage and turned the place into a concert. At this point, I got up and went home.”

He questioned the overall format of the service:

“Do people understand what a funeral is? They could have just played hymns.”

Daddy Freeze also addressed the dress code drama, apologising to those offended by his choice of outfit.

“I apologise to everyone who felt offended because of what I wore to Alex’s service of songs. I wore black because I didn’t see the invite on IG… Where I come from, people wear black to mourn. I don’t understand the white. I thought we were mourning a young man who died when it was not yet his time.”

He went further, attributing Alexx Ekubo’s death to systemic issues:

“He died because of Nigeria’s failure and religious influence.”

The outspoken critic also expressed surprise at Pastor Nathaniel Bassey’s testimony, noting the pastor revealed plans to pray and sing for Alexx but could not perform a miracle. He questioned the need for a sermon at the gathering, pointing out that phones were allegedly stolen despite the preaching.

Additionally, Daddy Freeze tackled Yul Edochie’s earlier comment about Alexx not showing his wife before his death:

“To Yul Edochie, who blamed Alex for not showing his wife before he died, what is your business with the wife? Do you want to start dating her? Everything is not clout.”

Mercy Chinwo had led a powerful praise and worship session at the service, which many attendees described as uplifting and spirit-filled during the emotional tribute to the late actor.

Daddy Freeze’s remarks have triggered intense backlash online, with many accusing him of insensitivity and disrespecting the grieving process and the ministers who came to offer spiritual comfort. Others, however, agreed that solemn events should maintain a more reflective mood.
