Veteran entertainer, activist, and musician Charly Boy has challenged Nigerian musicians to wake up and use their powerful platforms to address the harsh realities facing ordinary citizens instead of staying silent or detached.
The outspoken Area Fada stressed that entertainers wield more influence than many politicians and therefore carry a responsibility to shape public discourse through their art and voices. Charly Boy said:
“They can do more. They have larger platforms than politicians. It won’t hurt them to speak up or make music that reflects reality.”
The legendary singer expressed deep worry over Nigeria’s escalating insecurity, warning that failure to tackle root causes could lead to catastrophic consequences.
“It’s going to explode in our faces.”
Charly Boy also pointed fingers at the erosion of family values, blaming harsh economic conditions that push some parents to encourage their children to engage in questionable means of survival. He criticised outdated parenting styles, noting they no longer work effectively with Gen Z children.
Despite his strong criticisms, the activist expressed guarded optimism about Nigeria’s future, placing hope in exceptional young people who are ready to create opportunities for themselves rather than wait for government handouts. He praised the rise of a new generation of activists and social commentators boldly using their voices for change.
The veteran, known for his unconventional lifestyle and activism, admitted he was once rebellious and “irresponsible” in his younger days but never lost sight of his goals, even amid clashes with his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.
