Veteran Nollywood actor, dramatist, and scholar Kola Oyewo has passed away at the age of 80, sending shockwaves through the Nigerian entertainment industry.

The sad news was announced on Friday, June 12, 2026, by his younger colleague, actor Kunle Afod, who confirmed the veteran’s demise in an emotional Instagram post that read:

“Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on.”

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. He rose to national and continental prominence through his powerful stage and screen performances, particularly his iconic portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play, The Gods Are Not to Blame.

Widely respected as one of the pillars of Yoruba theatre and Nollywood, Kola Oyewo blended academic excellence with practical acting prowess. He held advanced degrees and lectured in universities while maintaining a strong presence in film and stage productions.

His death marks the end of an era for Nigerian theatre. Colleagues and fans have flooded social media with tributes, celebrating his discipline, versatility, and lasting impact on the industry.
