Waje Reveals She Was Never Paid or Credited for Singing on P-Square’s Classic ‘Do Me’

Nigerian singer Waje has revealed that she was never paid for her vocal contribution to P-Square’s 2007 hit single, “Do Me.”

Speaking during an interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast with Daddy Freeze, the award-winning vocalist, whose real name is Aituaje Iruobe, disclosed that although her powerful voice was a defining feature of the song, she received no financial compensation and was not officially credited.

“I didn’t earn a dime from P-Square’s ‘Do Me’,” Waje said. “Imagine being in Onitsha market and telling people that’s my voice every time the song is played, and they’re looking at you like, ‘Who are you?’ They didn’t believe me.”

Waje, who delivered the unforgettable hook “Do me, I do you…”, shared that her exclusion from the official credits and music video left her sidelined during a defining moment in Nigeria’s pop music history.

The singer revealed she could not travel for the music video shoot at the time because she didn’t have an international passport, a limitation that made it even easier for her contribution to be overlooked.

Despite her uncredited role, “Do Me” became one of P-Square’s biggest breakout songs, dominating charts across Africa and cementing the twin brothers, Peter and Paul Okoye, as Afrobeats powerhouses. The track was part of their third studio album, Game Over, which sold millions of copies across the continent.

Reflecting on the experience, Waje noted that the incident taught her the importance of contracts and ownership in music collaborations, a message that continues to resonate with young artists today.

The revelation has since sparked heated reactions online, with fans divided between sympathy and criticism.

One fan, @simply_reky, wrote, “They’re too greedy, that’s why they separated.” Another user, @makeit_bling, commented, “You’re supposed to sign a contract, this is purely business. Nigerians sha.”

Others questioned her approach, with @wahala_wire asking, “Did you ask and they didn’t give you?” while @officialjayh_bee added, “Those egbon dem stingy gann o.”

P-Square, who parted ways in 2016 due to internal disagreements, reunited briefly in 2021 but have since returned to pursuing solo careers as Rudeboy and Mr P.

Waje, however, remains one of Nigeria’s most respected vocalists, with a career spanning over two decades and a reputation for advocacy on fair compensation and recognition for artists.
