Nigerian singer Brymo has sparked fresh conversation after explaining why men with limited financial means often enjoy longer-lasting marriages. He insisted the reason has nothing to do with their wives also being poor.
In a recent interview with Lahor Talk podcast, Brymo pointed to the independence many low-income men enjoy because they run their own small businesses.
“When I tell you that poor people have the longest marriage and stuff. It is because, have you noticed that all the poor men are vulcanizers, butcher, carpenter, who has his own shop,” he said.
He described how these men often source goods themselves, process them, sell them and even train apprentices.
“In fact, he has his own apprentice. That’s why the poor men can keep their wives. A woman does not want somebody to be taking care of her husband,” Brymo added.
According to the singer, control over one’s time and decisions matters more than the size of the income.
“A man’s marriage will last longer if he’s making stipend and he’s the boss. Go and check anywhere,” he stated.
He stressed that the longevity does not come from shared poverty but from the man remaining the one in charge of his livelihood.
“So that poor man’s marriage does not last longer because of the woman is also poor is a no. The man is a boss. No matter how small money he has, he’s the one in control of his life. He controls his own time. That’s all.”
The remarks have drawn mixed reactions. Some users agreed that autonomy and self-employment reduce external pressures that can strain marriages, while many others argued that money still plays a bigger role in relationship stability.
In the same interview, Brymo stood firmly by his previous comments about the Igbo people and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
“Everything I said about the Igbos, I won’t apologize for. Ojukwu started a war, declared Biafra and created its currency and anthem. When Nigeria took Biafra back, he fled to Ivory Coast with his family. That’s your founding father,” he said.
