Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has opened up about the emotional decision to involve her ex-husband prominently in their daughter Priscilla’s wedding to Tanzanian singer Juma Jux, revealing it was a deliberate move to break negative family patterns and secure a better future for her children.
Speaking on The Morayo Show with Morayo Afolabi-Brown, the actress explained her deep motivation rooted in African beliefs about generational curses.
“There’s something called ancestral curses. And we Africans believe it. Christians also. And I believe that if you do not want something to continue, you have to be able to break it,” she said.
Iyabo noted that both her parents were separated and she was determined not to allow the same cycle to repeat in her children’s lives.
“Every mistake they had made, that I have made, my children will not make it,” she declared.
The actress emphasised the personal sacrifice involved, putting aside her own feelings for her daughter’s sake:
“I had to put aside what I felt, my differences, and clear her path. That’s why I said I have paid the price for her to succeed, for her to be happy in her marriage.”
She stressed that her ex-husband deserved to be present because he is alive and remains their daughter’s father.
“Her father is not dead, he’s alive. So why can’t he be there?” Iyabo asked.
The mother made it clear that whatever issues existed between her and her ex should not extend to their child.
“He didn’t wrong her. Me and him fell out. That has nothing to do with her. I made the choice to marry him, right? So whatever it is that is going on between me and him, is between me and him. It shouldn’t extend to her.”
Iyabo Ojo’s candid revelation has resonated with many, highlighting themes of maturity, forgiveness, and breaking generational trauma. Her decision to prioritise her daughter’s happiness over personal grudges has drawn praise for emotional intelligence, even as some question the public nature of such family matters.
The wedding itself, which blended Nigerian and Tanzanian cultures, remains one of the most talked-about celebrity unions in recent times.
