Popular Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has strongly condemned the growing culture of mocking and tearing down celebrities online, warning that diminishing others’ achievements could come back to haunt critics in unexpected ways.
In a passionate outburst that has resonated with many in the entertainment industry, Deyemi addressed the harsh criticism and name-calling public figures often face, particularly the derogatory term “yeyebrities” used to dismiss celebrities.
“I see people who have no idea what the challenge is that people in the spotlight are facing. They just come up with a lot of things. It’s sad to see.”
The actor expressed deep concern over the trend, urging Nigerians to show more compassion toward those living in the public eye. He warned that words spoken against others carry consequences.
“People even call celebrities ‘yeyebrities’ because I’m like, whatever you diminish in somebody else’s life, you can never achieve.”
He further cautioned critics not to assume their own families will never face the spotlight.
“So, let’s just pray that in your lineage, nobody finds their way into the spotlight, because if that happens, then you’ve opened up the door for such things to be said about them.”
Deyemi encouraged empathy instead of constant attacks, reminding everyone that celebrities also battle real-life struggles behind the glamour.
His message comes at a time when social media dragging of public figures has become increasingly toxic, often leading to mental health challenges for those targeted. Many have applauded Deyemi for speaking up, while others argue that public scrutiny is part of the price of fame.
