Popular Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has ignited fierce debate after directly blaming Nigerians’ waste disposal habits for the recurring and worsening flooding crisis in Lagos, urging citizens to take personal responsibility and stop blocking drainages.

In a passionate video shared on his Instagram story on Monday, June 29, 2026, Remi vented his frustration as heavy rains submerged several communities, leaving residents displaced and struggling.

“Let’s call a spade a spade. Nigerians are dirty people and that is why there’s flood everywhere.”

The actor pointed out how flooding has now spread far beyond traditional areas like Lekki.

“I saw it on the news that Gbagada’s flooded. Gbagada! This is no longer a Lekki problem. Ilupeju was also reported to have been flooded. My friend cannot even leave his house — he’s stuck there. I don’t even know if he has been eating well. He has been stuck in Agungi.”

He made a strong appeal for behavioural change:

“Let’s stop throwing trash in drainages. Let’s stop blocking drainages. We’re not animals. Be vigilant, open your eyes, fight. Speak up against it. Correct people wherever you find them littering.”

Remi warned that the situation is rapidly deteriorating, forcing many Lagos residents to rely on trucks or SUVs for daily movement.

“Jokes apart, it’s getting worse. Everyone in Lagos now has to get a truck or an SUV. If we all do the right thing, it’ll make things better.”

The video quickly went viral after being reshared by platforms like Instablog9ja, drawing sharply divided reactions. While many agreed that indiscriminate waste disposal worsens flooding by blocking drainages, others criticised Remi for oversimplifying a multifaceted problem t

His latest comments come as severe flooding continues to disrupt lives across multiple Lagos communities following few days of rainfall.
