Latoya Ekemode, widow of legendary saxophonist and Afrobeat pioneer Orlando Julius, has opened up about her husband’s foundational role in shaping the genre, while also addressing their 17-year age-gap marriage that defied societal expectations.
In a candid interview, Latoya highlighted Orlando Julius’s immense contributions to Afrobeat, noting that he was experimenting with the fusion of highlife, jazz, and traditional Yoruba rhythms long before the genre gained global prominence. She insisted that her husband was a key figure in shaping what later became known as Afrobeat.
“Orlando Julius was there before Fela,” she asserted, addressing ongoing conversations in the music industry about the roots of Afrobeat. According to Latoya, his early works and collaborations helped lay the groundwork for the genre that Fela Kuti later popularized worldwide. She added that while debates continue, it ultimately didn’t matter as they could be laughing over the fans in “music heaven.”
Latoya shared how their marriage, despite the 17-year age difference, was built on deep love, mutual respect, and a shared passion for music. She described Orlando Julius as a man whose talent and personality transcended age, making their connection feel natural and destined.
Reflecting on the early days of their relationship, she acknowledged that many questioned the significant age gap. However, she was drawn to his wisdom, creativity, and gentle spirit.
“Love knows no age.”
Their union was marked by artistic synergy. Latoya actively supported her husband’s career throughout their time together and continues to preserve his legacy after his passing in 2022.
