Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has joined the Nigerian entertainment industry in mourning the untimely death of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, describing the loss as heartbreaking and painful for the creative sector.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Obi expressed deep sadness over the passing of the young and talented actor.
“I received with sadness the heartbreaking news of the passing of young and talented Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, whose death has left the Nigerian entertainment industry and millions of admirers across the country mourning.”
The politician extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and colleagues in Nollywood.
“On behalf of myself and everyone who values the immense contributions of our young creatives to nation-building, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues in Nollywood, and the countless fans whose lives he touched through his craft.”
Obi reflected on the fragility of life, urging compassion and purposeful living.
“At moments like this, we are reminded once again of the fragility of life and the importance of living with kindness, compassion, and a sense of purpose.”
He concluded with prayers for the family:
“I pray that God Almighty grants his family the strength and comfort to bear this painful loss, and may his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”
Alexx Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke passed away at the age of 40 after a courageous battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer. He died at Evercare Hospital in Lagos, with his family confirming the news and describing how he bore his pain with remarkable strength, unwavering faith, and enduring hope.

The actor rose to fame as first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria pageant and built a successful career in Nollywood with roles in films such as Weekend Getaway, Hire a Woman, Sugar Rush, and Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons. Known for his charisma, height, and versatility, Ekubo was also involved in modelling, humanitarian work, and social advocacy.
