Nollywood actress Funke Adesiyan has withdrawn her aspiration for the House of Representatives seat representing the Ibadan South East/North East Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC). The surprise announcement came just days after the party released its 2027 election timetable with House primaries scheduled for May 15.
In a formal statement, the veteran actress cited careful thought and consultations as the driving force behind her decision.
“Following certain reflections and high-level consultations, I have taken the decision to withdraw my aspiration for the House of Representatives seat representing IBADAN SOUTH EAST/ NORTH EAST FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY.”
She described the move as
“personal, deliberate, and guided by a clear assessment of the broader political landscape, as well as my commitment to long-term value, credibility and purposeful service.”
Funke Adesiyan added that stepping back felt more strategic at this time.
“At this time, I consider it more important to step back with clarity and focus, while continuing to contribute meaningfully to the progress and development of our people through other strategic avenues.”
She reaffirmed her dedication to Oyo State and Nigeria, stating,
“I remain committed to the advancement of Oyo state and our country, Nigeria.”
The actress, who holds a degree in Performing Arts from Olabisi Onabanjo University, a Diploma in Law from the same institution, and filmmaking training at the New York Film Academy, has built a successful career starring in films such as Eti Keta and Obirin Ale. Her political journey includes serving as southwest coordinator for Ibrahim Shekarau’s 2011 presidential campaign and as personal assistant on domestic and social events to Aisha Buhari in 2019. She had recently declared her intention to contest the seat on the APC platform before this sudden reversal.
Her withdrawal highlights the intense demands of Nigerian politics, where personal ambition often gives way to wider strategic considerations. Funke Adesiyan’s choice to prioritise “purposeful service” over immediate candidacy resonates with many who see it as a mature and selfless move amid the high-stakes race for 2027.
As the APC gears up for primaries, her decision leaves the Ibadan South East/North East slot open and sparks questions about who will emerge as the party’s flagbearer. The actress has not indicated her next political or professional steps, but her statement suggests she will remain active in public service through alternative channels.
