Laju Iren’s debut cinema feature, Onobiren: A Woman’s Story, has crossed the prestigious N100 million mark at the Nigerian box office, reaching N100.5 million in just 20 days since its cinematic release. The milestone builds directly on the film’s impressive opening weekend, where it grossed N30.1 million and topped the national charts ahead of both Nollywood and Hollywood releases.

The movie has maintained strong momentum, holding the number one spot for two consecutive weekends and climbing steadily from its debut figure. It now stands as the second highest-grossing Nollywood title of 2026 so far, trailing only Love and New Notes, produced by Timini Egbuson.
Directed by Famous Odion Iraoya, Onobiren centers on Roli, a determined young woman who relocates from Warri to Lagos in search of better opportunities. The film explores themes of women’s struggles, purpose, survival, and self-discovery, challenging conventional stereotypes and societal expectations placed on women in African communities.
Laju Iren, who produced the project in collaboration with African No Filter and CcHUB Creative Economy, took to social media to celebrate the achievement and thank God for the achievement.
“Lord Jesus, I don’t know what to say. Except You build the house, they labour in vain that build it. This is all you. My eyes are filled with tears of thanksgiving. My lips with tongues of joy. Thank you. I don’t take for granted what you have done with Onobiren; and I will not pretend that you are not deserving of all the glory, because you are. Thank you for the honour of telling your stories, And for crowning every effort with success.”
The film marks her first-ever cinema release and her first woman-led story on the big screen.
The cast features veteran and rising talents including Patience Ozokwor, Deyemi Okanlawon, Norbert Young, Bisola Aiyeola, and Desmond Bryce, whose performances have been widely praised for bringing depth to the film’s powerful story.
This rapid rise to N100.5 million underscores a growing audience appetite for intentional, story-driven Nollywood films that highlight relevant social issues like in Onobiren. The film continues its theatrical run in cinemas, with many predicting further growth as word-of-mouth continues to spread.
