A recent tweet from Chocolate City’s Head A&R, 10TEN, has stirred up the Nigerian music community once again. He shared details about how Asake was on the verge of joining his label before opting for YBNL.

According to 10TEN, all parties had aligned for Asake to sign with Chocolate City. The paperwork was ready. But Asake ghosted the deal. Later, he explained he wanted to test a release first. He then dropped “Omo Ope,” which gained traction. After that, 10TEN noted he did not see Asake again, implying the artist pursued other opportunities which led to his signing with Olamide’s YBNL, where he rose to fame.

Online responses have been lively. Many express relief that Asake avoided Chocolate City. A post read, “Believe in yourself sha. If choc city had signed asake, he might not be the official aso ebi of Nigeria.”

Fans credit YBNL for his success, celebrating Olamide’s role in discovering talent early.
