Nigerian Music Icon Akin Shuga Dies in Canada, Family Pays Emotional Tribute

Award-winning Nigerian singer and bandleader, Akinloye “Akin Shuga” Tofowomo, has passed away. His family announced his death in a statement shared via his official Instagram page on Monday.

According to the family, the revered musician and founder of the renowned Shuga Band died in New Brunswick, Canada, though the cause of death was not disclosed.

“It is with profound solemnity and total submission to the will of God that the family of Akinloye Tofowomo (Akin Shuga), revered music icon, Grandmaster, and Managing Director of Shuga Limb Foundation and Shuga Entertainment, Nigeria’s most prestigious live band, announces his passing in New Brunswick, Canada”, the statement read in part.

The family described the late singer as “a custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance” who redefined live band leadership with grace and mastery over the course of more than three decades.

“To countless admirers at home and abroad, he was both an inspiration and an institution — a true king in his art”, the family added.

They appealed for privacy as they mourn, noting that details of the memorial and burial arrangements will be communicated in due course.

“The family extends heartfelt appreciation to all who have reached out with prayers, tributes, and kind words. Akinloye Tofowomo’s legacy will continue to live on through the Shuga Band and Shuga Entertainment. He is survived by his loving wife, children, siblings, and mother. May his noble soul find eternal rest”, the statement concluded.

Akin, who contracted polio at the age of five, went on to found the Shuga Limb Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to supporting individuals living with the condition. His personal story of triumph and purpose inspired many across Nigeria’s entertainment and disability advocacy communities.

In a 2018 interview with Premium Times, the Ondo-born singer reflected on his journey, saying his staying power in the industry was a product of “destiny, timing, and divine source.”

The alumnus of Berklee College of Music, Boston, was best known for songs like “I Can Walk,” “My Lady,” and “Married Today.” He also received numerous accolades including the City People Lifetime Achievement Award (2017), Best Band of the Year (2016), and the Beatz Award (2017).

Akin Shuga’s life was one of melody, resilience, and impact; a true celebration of music and humanity.
