Tems beats Rihanna, Beyoncé to new music chart record in US
Temilade Openiyi, also known as Temz, a Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, has surpassed American female music icons to set a new Billboard chart record.
The Nigerian accomplished the unusual accomplishment when her song ‘Free Mind’ broke the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart record for the longest running number one by a female artist.
The song remained at number one on the list this week, giving it a total of 17 weeks at the top, a record for any female artist.
The song debuted on the main chart, Billboard Hot 100 last year, making Tems the first Nigerian female soloist to appear as a lead on the chart.
‘Free Mind,” which is off Tems’ debut Extended Play (EP) has earned millions of streams in the United States across major digital streaming platforms.
