Veteran Nollywood actress Ebun Hodo has issued a stern warning to aspiring young actresses, declaring that beauty and sex appeal alone are insufficient for success in the highly competitive Nigerian movie industry.
Speaking in a chat with Potpourri, the experienced thespian emphasised that talent, dedication, and hard work remain the true keys to longevity and relevance in Nollywood.
“I personally do not think beauty and sex appeal are enough for you to succeed in the Nollywood industry. There is a saying that goes, ‘Many are called, but few are chosen.”
She went further with a direct message to those relying on physical attributes:
“I’m sorry, ma’am, your distribution of sex appeal won’t take you anywhere in Nollywood, except through the usual shortcuts like juju.”
Hodo stressed that the industry demands more than just a pretty face.
“Nollywood is an industry where talent and dedication matter more than looks. You need to bring something real to the table, whether it’s passion, hard work, or a commitment to your craft, because looks will only get you so far.”
The actress challenged young talents to self-reflect:
“Are you really among the chosen? Do you have the knowledge of what you are doing? Can you interpret roles with depth and conviction?”
Her candid advice comes at a time when many young and beautiful faces flood Nollywood daily, hoping physical appeal will fast-track their stardom. Hodo’s words serve as a reality check, highlighting that while beauty may open initial doors, only genuine skill and resilience can sustain a meaningful career in the industry.
