Nollywood actress Bunmi Nelson has publicly expressed deep regret over rejecting an early collaboration opportunity with Funke Akindele nearly two decades ago, admitting that pride and judgment cost her a major career breakthrough.
Appearing on Biola Adebayo’s Talk To B podcast, Nelson opened up about the moment in 2006 when Akindele, then rising in the industry, personally reached out to her.
“I didn’t know Funke would go this far,” she began.
Nelson recalled how the filmmaker went out of her way to include her.
“She was the one who took me to Odunfa. She used to come to my house in Magodo to shoot. She even said ‘Bummi, come join us.’”
Despite the clear invitation, the actress held back.
“But I was proud and judgmental. I heard stories about the Yoruba industry and I pulled back.”
Looking at Akindele’s massive success today, Nelson admitted the decision still hurts.
“Now I can’t even see Funke‘s back. That was my big opportunity and I blew it.”
She reflected on the hard lessons that followed.
“Life has taught me humility the hard way.”
In a direct message to her colleague, Nelson added:
“I’m sorry Funke. I’m back in the industry and I’m open to work with you.”
She further noted that if she had known how far Akindele would rise as a filmmaker and box-office powerhouse, she would have held on tightly to the invitation. Nelson also linked part of her long absence from active acting to personal decisions, stating she regrets leaving her career for a marriage to a toxic man.
The candid confession has drawn attention online, with many viewers praising her honesty and humility. Nelson, who has been rebuilding her presence in the industry and runs her own relationship-focused podcast, used the moment to stress the importance of not underestimating people based on their current status.
