Nollywood actor and filmmaker Jide Awobona has openly requested a ₦50 million grant from Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to launch a proper food business that will include akara.
In a revealing appearance on the Conversations With Kenni podcast hosted by Kehinde Ajose, the Inspector Jero star explained the viral video of himself frying and selling akara that circulated amid the First Lady’s comments on small businesses like akara and kulikuli.
When asked if the post was a direct reaction to the First Lady’s statement, Awobona clarified his intention.
“I know some people see it as a reaction, but to me, I was simply shooting my shot.”
Looking straight into the camera, he made a bold and direct appeal:
“Mummy First Lady, please, I need a grant. I don’t need 50 thousand naira, I need 50 million naira to start my restaurant business and akara will definitely be involved. I don’t want a car, I don’t want a bus, I don’t want anything. All I want from the First Lady is 50 million naira grant to start up my food business.”
Confirming he is serious about the venture, he added:
“I’m really serious. You saw me frying the akara and how well it turned out. I can do it. I cook. It’s one of the businesses I’ve always wanted.”
Awobona revealed he had previously considered selling moin-moin to Nollywood colleagues and online customers. He stressed the importance of multiple income streams, especially in the current economy, while acknowledging the demanding nature of acting.
“Who doesn’t want to have a side hustle and multiple streams of income? But then, this is a profession that is very jealous, selfish, and requires your 100 percent.”
He shared past experiences running businesses, including making bags, and the challenges of supervising operations personally to avoid losses.
“We’re trying, but the economy is not easy. Cost of running a business is not easy.”
