Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has ignited fierce backlash after revealing she burned the outfit she wore to the funeral of her late colleague, Alexx Ekubo, with many accusing her of insensitivity during a time of mourning.

The actress attended the burial rites of the deceased actor in Arochukwu, Abia State, but later shared a video of the outfit being set on fire, explaining it was based on spiritual advice from her godmother.

In a follow-up Instagram Story addressing the heavy backlash, Angela Okorie fired back at her detractors while clarifying her intentions.

“Oh well. Those who know, know my message out here is not to stir up whatever… Anyways suit yourselves. I gave the outfit I wore to the burial to my aunt in Owerri to burn it for me. I didn’t even go to Lagos with it.”

She warned critics to respect the grieving process:

“You had better shut up your mouth and understand the family and loved ones are still grieving. Be careful what you say out there.”

Angela also shared a supportive WhatsApp message from her mother:

“Spiritual secrets cant be understood by everyone…. You did absolutely the proper thing my Munchkin.”

The video and her defensive response triggered widespread condemnation online, with many fans arguing that publicizing the burning of the funeral outfit so soon after the burial showed poor judgment and lacked empathy for Alexx Ekubo’s grieving family and friends.

Some critics questioned whether she would also burn other items she took to the funeral, such as her bag or accessories, while others accused her of seeking attention during a solemn period.

As the Nollywood community continues to mourn Alexx Ekubo, the actress’s action has reopened debates around cultural and spiritual practices surrounding death and mourning in Nigeria.
