The Baba Ijesha controversy has taken a fresh twist as Nollywood actor Yomi Fabiyi publicly defended his colleague Olanrewaju Omiyinka, known as Baba Ijesha, during a recent live session. The comments, which quickly went viral after being on various pages, have triggered strong reactions across social media.

Fabiyi claimed there was no intention of rape in the 2021 incident that led to Baba Ijesha’s conviction.

“There was no intention to rape. Baba Ijesha just wanted to play with the girl and kiss her quickly because he knew the homeowner would be back soon.”

Elaborating on his position, he added,

“He just wanted to kiss the girl and play with her breasts.”

The remarks refer to the high-profile case in which Baba Ijesha was caught on CCTV sexually assaulting the then 14-year-old daughter of Damilola Adekoya, popularly known as Princess. It is important to note that Baba Ijesha was convicted in July 2022 by a Lagos State High Court on charges of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child, and served a prison term before his recent release.

The defence has reignited debate within the Nollywood community and among the public. Many online users described the statements as deeply troubling, with some calling for accountability and questioning how such an actor could champion the minimisation of such an offence against a minor. Others expressed shock that a fellow actor would frame the actions in such terms years after the conviction and sentencing.

This latest development comes amid an already heated saga.

Fabiyi’s intervention has now added another layer to the ongoing conversation about addressing past convictions, victim sensitivity, and public statements from celebrities.

The statement has drawn both condemnation and calls for Fabiyi to also be investigated. The Baba Ijesha case remains a sensitive topic, with many stressing the importance of protecting children and respecting judicial outcomes.
