Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has spoken out against calls for his cancellation following the chaotic Cardiff leg of his UK tour. In a lengthy social media statement, the veteran entertainer expressed deep pain that a single disappointing night is being used to erase more than two decades of consistent work and connection with fans.

The controversy stems from the AY Live: Single and Not Searching show scheduled for Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Valegate Retail Park in Cardiff. Fans who had paid for tickets waited for hours only to leave without seeing the main performances. AY later explained that unresolved payment commitments with the organisers delayed his team’s appearance, and by the time they gained access most of the audience had already gone home. He issued an initial apology days earlier, stressing that ticket holders should never have been caught in the middle of a financial dispute and calling for clear refund information from the organisers and UK tour management.

Despite that apology, online criticism intensified into demands for cancellation. AY responded with a heartfelt post that mixed regret, defence of his record and a forward-looking offer.

“I have seen the insults, the judgment, and the calls to cancel AY. It hurts to see one painful night used to dismiss more than twenty years of showing up for my fans,” he wrote.

He questioned why negative stories about him generate such immediate excitement while years of consistency and achievements receive far less attention.

Some respected industry figures advised him to stay silent and let the matter fade, but AY rejected that approach. He said the people who spent time and money to see him deserved a proper explanation.

“The internet does not forget, and my side should be heard too,” he stated.

He revealed that for years he had performed even when payments were broken, sometimes covering colleagues’ fees from his own pocket. After repeated issues on this tour and a five-hour drive from Sheffield to Cardiff, he reached his limit. Still, he made clear that the waiting fans had done nothing wrong.

AY offered a sincere apology for the disappointment, wasted time and upset caused. He invited people to watch an accompanying video for his full account and urged those who shared criticism to share his response with equal energy.

“Please consider my years of commitment alongside this one incident. I will learn from it and keep working. Calls for cancellation will not make me give up on everything we have built,” he declared.

He respected that not everyone has to support him or attend his shows, but asked the same respect for those who continue to stand by the AY brand.

In a concrete gesture toward the Cardiff audience, AY announced plans to return for a free show at his own expense once venue and arrangements are confirmed. He noted that the free performance would not replace any refunds owed for the original event. He closed by thanking supporters and those who offered kind corrections, adding that he still has laughter to share and people to perform for.

“The show goes on,” he concluded.
