Gospel singer Asu Ekiye has broken his silence on the end of his 28-year marriage, insisting that the decision to divorce was not his and that his wife left without any prior conflict.
The award-winning artiste, popularly known as the Prince of the Niger Delta, first announced the dissolution of his union with Kunemofa Asu on social media earlier this week. He noted that the marriage, which began in 1998 and produced four children, had actually ended a year earlier. He delayed going public to process the change and approach it with clarity.

In a follow-up statement shared on Saturday, Ekiye clarified the circumstances after receiving numerous calls and messages.
“The decision regarding the dissolution of my marriage was not one I initiated. My wife expressed her desire to end the marriage, packed out of my house and subsequently instituted divorce proceedings without any quarrels,” he stated.
Ekiye said he spent about a year trying to save the relationship.
“For about a year thereafter, I made every reasonable effort, and appealed to her in every way I could, hoping that we could reconsider and preserve the marriage. Unfortunately, those efforts did not yield the desired outcome, as she remained firm in her decision.”
Having done all he could, the singer eventually accepted the reality and allowed the legal process to proceed. He emphasised that he holds no bitterness or ill will toward his former wife.
“Having done all I could to seek reconciliation, I eventually came to the difficult decision to accept the reality of the situation and allow the divorce process to take its course. I choose to approach this new chapter with grace, dignity, maturity and respect for all concerned.”
The revelation has drawn mixed reactions from fans and members of the gospel community, many of whom expressed surprise at the quiet ending of such a long-standing marriage. Ekiye has asked for privacy as he moves forward into a new season of life.
