Nollywood superstar Jim Iyke has opened up about his disastrous first audition, admitting he froze under pressure while chasing money for beer and weed with his friend, in a raw confession that has fans buzzing.

On The Joey Akan Experience podcast, the actor known as Nollywood’s ultimate bad boy recounted how broke he and his best friend Wunmi were during their youth service days. They stumbled upon an audition simply looking for quick cash.

“I was looking for money for beer, we were broke, I and my best friend Wunmi we were serving and just wanted to go drink and smoke weed. They said there was an audition going on down the street,” Jim Iyke shared.

The pay promised to keep them afloat for two days, so he decided to try his luck despite heavyweight actors being present. Confident it would be easy, he prepared his lines — only to completely freeze when the cameras and lights hit him.

“When I got to the audition stage after getting my lines, I froze. Everything I had been told vanished from my head. I froze because of the pressure. I thought it was going to be a walk in the park, but when the lights came on and a bunch of cameras were in my face, I lost form. It was very humbling,” he recalled.

The director’s reaction was brutal.

“The director walks in, ‘cuts,’ and asks, ‘where did you guys get this fool from?’”

When informed that Iyke had already been paid, the director gave him another chance but grew even more furious after the second failure, calling him unprintable names before throwing him out.

Thankfully, his friend performed well. The pair laughed about the incident afterwards, but that day ignited the fire that would eventually make him one of Nollywood’s biggest names.

This vulnerable story from the podcast humanises the screen icon many see as larger than life. It reveals the humble, uncertain beginnings behind the superstar persona and the resilience required to turn humiliating failure into legendary success.

The confession also highlights the unpredictable path to stardom in the entertainment industry, where even the biggest names often start with rejection and self-doubt.
