Nigerian singer and songwriter, Anosike Favour Ugochi, popularly known as Ugoccie, has been honoured with an Afro Indigenous Recognition Award by the Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, in Canada.

The award was presented on April 23, 2026, in recognition of her contribution to promoting indigenous Igbo culture through music.

Ugoccie rose to prominence with her breakout single “Do You Really Like Me” and has since carved a niche in the Nigerian music industry with her unique blend of Afrobeats and indigenous Igbo sounds. Known for songs like “Man on Fire” and “Achalugo,” she continues to fuse contemporary music with rich cultural storytelling.

Speaking on the honour, the Achalugo crooner described the recognition as both humbling and affirming.

“It meant a lot. At this point in my journey, it felt like a strong reminder that my voice and my culture are being seen beyond borders. Being recognized in a diverse city like Brampton, Canada, affirmed that what I represent goes beyond music, and to further be recognized as an indigenous artist shows that I’m doing well as an Igbo culture propagator.”

She attributed her growing international recognition to her authenticity and commitment to her roots.

“I think it comes from staying true to my roots while connecting with a wider audience. My sound carries my Igbo identity, and I’m intentional about how I share that. Beyond music, it’s also the way I engage people and create moments and long-lasting stories through my music.”

Reflecting on the award, Ugoccie expressed gratitude for the recognition.

“I felt proud, grateful, and reminded that the journey is being seen and appreciated.”
