In the high-stakes arena of Afrobeats, where loyalty to labels can make or break careers, former Mavin Artist Crayon has chosen to start his new chapter biting the proverbial hand that fed him. Crayon whose real name is Charles Chibueze Chukwu unleashed a barrage of tweets from his X account (@crayonthis) that sent shockwaves through the industry.
What started as a mutual parting with Mavin Records quickly escalated into a public airing of grievances, with Crayon declaring, “Mavin is going down !!!!!!”, “My mama d!e because of Una,” and adding, “Don Jazzy na my boy” The posts were however deleted shortly after, but not before screenshots and conversations lit up timelines all over the internet.
Crayon’s journey with Mavin has been nothing short of a fairy tale turned rollercoaster. Discovered by Mavin label boss Don Jazzy in 2018 at just 19, he went on to give us the sensational ijo labalaba and Overdose bangers that racked up millions of streams quickly making Crayon a staple in Mavin’s roster of hitmakers.
But whispers of tension had been bubbling for months. Insiders hinted at creative clashes and uneven promotion, especially as Rema skyrocketed to global fame with “Calm Down” remixes and Ayra Starr dominated charts with “Rush.” Crayon’s output slowed post-2023’s “Palazzo,” with fans clamoring for more amid a label pivot toward its brighter stars. Then, on March 13, 2026, “Baami,” a soulful mid-tempo jam dropped via streaming platforms, and carried zero Mavin branding. Instead, it flew under the banner of Olodum Entertainment, Crayon’s freshly minted independent label.
Reports say Crayon’s contract had expired, and both camps agreed it was time to part ways amicably. Don Jazzy, ever the diplomat, stayed silent initially, but Mavin’s official channels echoed the mutual respect narrative. Crayon, however, had other ideas. He hit X with a thread that peeled back the curtain on alleged frustrations. In one now-deleted post, captured in widespread screenshots, he name-dropped COO Tega Oghenejobo and vented about “money withheld” and “favoritism” that left him sidelined.
