Nigerian music superstar Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has etched his name deeper into global music history after becoming the first African artist to surpass 10 billion streams on Spotify.
The historic milestone was achieved as streams across Wizkid’s entire catalogue, including lead songs, features, and collaborations crossed the 10 billion mark on the global streaming platform.
Wizkid’s dominance on Spotify is powered largely by his international collaborations. His song with Canadian rapper Drake and South African singer Tyla stands as his most streamed track, pulling in close to four billion streams, according to Spotify data.
His critically acclaimed third studio album, Made In Lagos (Deluxe), remains his most streamed project on the platform, with over one billion streams, further cementing its status as one of the most influential Afrobeats albums of the streaming era.
As a lead artist, Wizkid’s global hit “Essence” featuring Tems continues to shine, recording over 333 million streams and earning its place as one of the songs that helped push Afrobeats into mainstream global culture.
Spotify data also places Wizkid firmly at the top of African artists by total streams, ahead of Burna Boy (9.5 billion), Rema (5.6 billion), Tems (4.4 billion) and Tyla (3.6 billion).
Beyond numbers, Wizkid’s catalogue boasts collaborations with global stars such as Beyoncé, Chris Brown, and several other international heavyweights, reflecting the worldwide reach of his sound.
The achievement highlights not just Bigwiz’s longevity, but also the global rise of Afrobeats and the shift from traditional music formats to digital streaming platforms as the new measure of success.
Wizkid’s milestone comes after more than a decade of consistent music releases, reinforcing his status as one of Africa’s most influential and globally respected artists.
