Nigerian rap icon and YBNL boss, Olamide, has revealed one personal habit he can never outgrow regardless of his fame or fortune: drinking Garri Ijebu.
The rapper made the confession during a recent appearance on the audio-visual podcast Ada’s Room, where he opened up about his lifestyle, personality, and his love for simple pleasures despite global success.
This comes shortly after Olamide shut down the 12,500-capacity OVO Arena in London, performing alongside Seyi Vibez, Asake, and other guest artistes; a milestone that reignited conversations about his impact and longevity in the Nigerian music industry.
During the interview, Olamide jokingly wished people could “request a hot slap” from him, saying many social media users “are really rude online.” Despite his witty remarks, he made it clear that he is naturally calm and reserved, adding that some people mistake his quietness for shyness. According to him, his decision to stay laid-back is intentional; a strategy to give rising acts more room to shine.
“People think I’m shy, but I’m not. I just stay laid back so upcoming artistes can have their space too because the industry is very competitive”, he said.
When asked about something he would never give up, no matter how wealthy he becomes, Olamide responded without hesitation:
“No matter how rich I am, I can never stop drinking Garri Ijebu. I love it with cold water… and groundnut has to be there.”
The “Infinity” crooner added that his biggest dream as an artiste is to continue creating timeless music; records he can listen to in the next decade and still enjoy as much as his fans do.
Olamide’s fondness for Garri Ijebu echoes sentiments recently shared by Grammy-winning superstar Wizkid, who also admitted in an interview with K1 De Ultimate’s children that he “loves Garri Ijebu so much.”
With both megastars publicly declaring their love for the iconic Nigerian staple, fans say the humble Garri Ijebu has now become “the real celebrity favourite.”
