People Said the Grammys Will Never Recognize Me-Davido
Nigerian pop sensation Davido, who recently earned three nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards, has shared his journey to recognition, revealing the doubts he faced along the way.
Speaking as a guest on The Morning Hustle show, the award-winning artiste opened up about the criticism he endured early in his career. “I wasn’t nominated for the Grammys for some time. I used to get bashed for it. People said the Grammys will never recognize me,” Davido recalled.
Despite the negativity, he chose to focus on his craft. “I just decided to keep doing what I do. If it comes, good; if it doesn’t come, I will keep doing what I do. Two years, four nominations—it doesn’t come like that,” he said.
The Awuke crooner also reflected on overcoming stereotypes as a wealthy individual pursuing music. “I don’t like calling myself a rich kid because I have my own money now. I am probably the only rich kid that went far in music because, especially with the way our culture is, they tell you, ‘You are already rich, why are you dragging this with us?’” he said.
He noted the years it took to earn acceptance in the industry. “I went through that for years, till they said, ‘This guy is kinda good.’ Then they realized he is really good. I know what I went through to get to that level of acceptance.”
The artist also revealed his plans to branch into film, saying, “I am investing in film. I am executive producing one movie and a series.”
