Mr Macaroni, an actor and skit creator, has criticised Femi Gbajabiamila, President Bola Tinubu’s chief of staff, for stating that social media must be regulated to curb excesses.

Gbajabiamila revealed this at a book event in Lagos on Thursday, claiming that it is the government’s job to ensure that individuals connect with truthful and verifiable information on social media platforms.

The book Nigerian Public Discourse: The Interplay of Empirical Evidence and Hyperbole was written by former minister of works and housing, Babatunde Fashola.

A statement by Tunde Alao, senior special assistant on media to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, quoted Gbajabimila as saying: “The social media has become a societal menace and must be regulated. As many people do not understand that once the send button is hit, there is a potential to reach millions of people around the world which is capable of causing a great danger not just in the society but even unintended consequences to the individuals that are receiving information which may include security of life.”

Reacting in a post on X on Saturday, Mr Macaroni shared screenshots of Gbajabiamila’s 2014 tweets saying, “Mr @femigbaja
This was you when Social Media was sweeting you. It is evident that you and this accidental and desperate government of yours regard Nigerians as Imbeciles!! Well we are not!!! The people are suffering!!! Fix up and put an end to this ridiculousness!!!!”
