Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has spoken out about the massive career boost he received from his breakout role as Odogwu while firmly rejecting attempts by producers to lock him into the same character forever. The star shared his thoughts in a recent episode of the CreativiTea podcast hosted by Lynda Aguocha, where he reflected on how the part transformed his professional life yet created an unexpected challenge.
Arukwe explained that the success of the character brought immediate financial rewards and a flood of brand partnerships.
“It changed my life, I can’t even lie. More money started coming, a lot more brand deals, and then all the producers in Nollywood now want to kill me with Odogwu character,” he said.
He made it clear that while he appreciates the opportunities, he refuses to let one role define him.
“I’m an actor through and through. So you can’t put me in a box. It’s not even possible.”
The actor noted that many producers keep offering him variations of the same confident, wealthy Igbo businessman figure because they feel confident the formula will deliver returns. He challenged them to take creative risks instead.
“The same way someone took a chance on that character, you can also create another character and give it to me, and God can breathe upon it, and then it would do well in itself as well,” Arukwe stated.
He acknowledged that the character has distinctive mannerisms audiences love but insisted those traits can be adjusted rather than repeated endlessly.
“You can tone him down. You can push him up, but there’s a mannerism that he has that a lot of people want.”
Despite the steady income the role continues to generate, Arukwe drew a firm line.
“I mean, it’s bringing money, but I will not be typecast. Never. I will not be put in a box,” he declared.
He pointed to Hollywood examples where actors become closely associated with certain types of roles yet still find ways to expand their range, and he expressed interest in exploring more varied characters, including different kinds of interesting Igbo roles.
Arukwe first became a household name through his portrayal of Obiora, better known as Odogwu Paranran, in the romantic drama Love in Every Word. Produced and directed by Omoni Oboli, the film premiered on YouTube on March 7, 2025, and quickly exploded in popularity. It crossed two million views within its first 24 hours and more than 11 million in the first week. By October 2026 the movie had surpassed 34 million views, driven by social media conversations and the catchphrases linked to the character’s bold style, lavish gifts and distinctive accent. A sequel, Love in Every Word: The Wedding, followed in October 2025.
The actor’s latest comments highlight a common tension in Nollywood, where commercial success can sometimes limit an artist’s range.
