Francis Duru Dies at 57 After Brief Illness

Nollywood has lost one of its enduring voices. Veteran actor Francis Duru passed away at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family confirmed in a statement released on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.

The family wrote with quiet dignity:

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

Actors Guild of Nigeria National President Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu also paid tribute, simply stating that another great thespian had gone and wishing the actor rest in peace.

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru later moved to Nigeria and studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996. He built a career that stretched more than three decades and left a lasting mark on Nigerian cinema. Many still remember him best as Ahanna in the 1995 action classic Rattlesnake, directed by the late Amaka Igwe. That role helped establish him as a reliable and versatile performer who moved easily between English and Igbo-language productions.

Beyond acting, Duru worked as a producer, director, voice-over artist and master of ceremonies. In 2010 he briefly served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria. He received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace Award in 2007 for his positive influence on young people and won Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his work in Mboputa.

His death carries an especially heavy weight for those who followed his personal story. Just two years earlier, in August 2024, he publicly mourned the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi. He is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their remaining children. In June 2026, Duru had publicly dismissed circulating videos that sparked concern about his health, assuring fans he was well.

Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues and fans who remember a professional known for discipline and quiet dedication. One of his final public posts, a heartfelt tribute to the late Olu Jacobs in September 2026, has taken on new resonance. In it he described the veteran as a mentor and teacher whose professionalism turned every set into a school.

Francis Duru’s passing leaves another gap in the ranks of Nollywood’s foundational generation. The industry now mourns a man who helped shape its early identity and continued working with quiet consistency long after many of his contemporaries had stepped back. His family has asked for prayers and understanding as they grieve.
