“I Don’t Want to Die!” — Jide Kosoko Opens Up on 30-Year Health Battle

Veteran Nollywood actor Jide Kosoko has opened up about living with diabetes for three decades, stating that the condition has taught him more about his body than many medical professionals. The 72-year-old made the disclosure during a recent interview on the African A-List YouTube channel that was uploaded on Saturday.

Kosoko spoke with quiet determination about his long health journey.

“I became diabetic in 1996; I understand my health better than some doctors do. Do not misquote me. I am not saying I know how to do everything, I just do not want to die,” he said.

The actor stressed that his experience managing the illness has made him highly attentive to his wellbeing and proactive about medical checks.

In the same conversation, Kosoko reflected on on his pioneering role in Nigerian theatre and film. He recalled starting acting as a child.

“I started theatre at age 10, in 1964, and formed my own group in 1972. I can confidently say that I am one of the pioneers of this industry,” he stated.

The veteran used the moment to advise parents on fairness, urging them to treat every child equally so that none feels less valued.

“Treat your children equally; let them know they’re equal in your mind,” he said.

On social media, Kosoko noted that the platform once caused fear among older creatives but has become a useful tool when handled responsibly. He questioned the value of certain trending content, asking why some people feel the need to post unnecessary material. His overall message remained focused on self-preservation, experience and the importance of staying healthy while continuing to work.
