Florence Otedola, the disc jockey known as DJ Cuppy, has admitted that the early years of her career were driven by a hunger for approval she no longer wants.

In a video she shared online, Cuppy looked back at the version of herself who treated relevance like oxygen. She described that stretch as a time when public attention felt like proof that she mattered, and the fear of slipping out of view sat close to the surface.

“I was so desperate for validation at the start of my career. I wanted to be relevant. I was scared of not being important. I craved clout,” she said.

She says that pressure has lifted. Cuppy told viewers she is now in a place of peace, and that her sense of worth is no longer tied to likes, mentions, or the need to stay visible. She linked the change to her faith, pointing to a Bible verse; 1st Galatians 10.

“Really and truly, am I trying to please people, or am I actually trying to please God because if I were people-pleasing, I would not be a servant of Christ, and so that is how I live my life,” she said. “Yeah, it’s working out for me. I no longer care what people think.”

The clip fits a shift she has spoken about more openly in recent years. In 2024 she described curating a set built only around Christian music, and she has said her larger aim is simply to reach heaven. She has also talked about guarding her peace and limiting the people she lets close.

Cuppy did not name a single moment that ended the habit. She framed it as growth that arrived once pleasing people stopped being the goal, and once she decided the approval she used to chase was no longer the measure of her life.
