Nigerian roads have come close to ending the careers of some of the country’s biggest names. From a Ferrari wreck in Lekki to a trailer collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, these ten celebrities walked away from crashes that could easily have been fatal. Their own words, shared in the hours and days after the wrecks, show how thin the margin was.
1. Anthony Joshua survived the most closely watched of the recent cases. On December 29, 2025, the former world heavyweight champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu when the vehicle hit a stationary truck. Police said early findings pointed to a tyre burst linked to speed. Two of his close friends and team members, strength coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Latif Ayodele, both 36, died at the scene. Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital in stable condition. He stayed largely quiet until late January 2026, when he posted a video tribute.
“We went home to see our families, and everything got flipped on its head. That was such an unforeseen circumstance that was out of all of our control,” he said.
He called the two men brothers first and business partners later.
“It’s like you think I’m the big guy, but I was walking with giants. I felt protected.”
He also pledged to help their families finish what the men had started.
2. Charles Okocha, known as Igwe 2Pac, posted from hospital after a crash on the Third Mainland Bridge in the early hours of January 15, 2023.
“Thankful for life. Was involved in a car accident on 3rd mainland bridge last night but GOD DID!!! We Asaaaaa still,” he wrote.
He later told Punch that a friend driving the car ignored his warnings to slow down. Another vehicle tried to pass, the brakes failed, and the car hit the bridge barricades.
“If not for those barricades, maybe we would be inside the river by now,” he said.
He added that he could have avoided the crash entirely if he had stayed in his own car, which was following behind.
3. Gospel singer Dunsin Oyekan called his September 3, 2022 crash a miracle in real time. He was travelling from Lagos to a church programme in Ibadan when the Toyota Prado he was in went under a trailer along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. A crew member suffered minor injuries. Everyone else walked away. Ministering that same night, he said:
“If you saw the accident scene that I came out of you can never believe that I walked out alive.”
He added:
“If you are looking for a miracle, this is a miracle standing here.”On Instagram he wrote that he was “perfectly ok. Body, Soul and Mind.”
4. Burna Boy confirmed his own wreck the day it happened. On February 26, 2022, the Grammy winner crashed his Ferrari in the Lekki axis of Lagos. He posted:
“Yes it’s true. I had a bad accident in my Ferrari today. My leg just hurts a little, but I’m fine.”
He also noted the crowd that gathered:
“It is funny how everyone came out with their phones recording me instead of helping out (I guess they were too excited to see me regardless of the situation lol) but I love you all.”
5. Harrysong’s close call came years earlier. In late June 2016 he and his crew were heading toward Owerri to catch a flight to Lagos for a Project Fame performance when their vehicle crashed on the Owerri-Onitsha expressway. No one was reported seriously hurt. He wrote on Instagram:
“At one point I thought I was crossing over to the other side but no. God still has great plans for me. He saved us. I’m grateful.”
6. Victony’s April 26, 2021 accident was among the most severe on this list. He was returning from a birthday party when the crash killed his friend Doyin and left him with severe bone injuries. He spent months in a wheelchair and underwent multiple surgeries before standing to perform again in December that year. Marking the anniversary, he wrote:
“On this day last year, everyone feared for my life. I lived in the dark for a while, as I kept drawing strength from God and the Outlaws.”
7. CDQ’s Mustang was written off in Lagos on August 15, 2023. He said another vehicle hit him at night and he was taken to hospital for checks.
“Someone hit me, and I had an accident tonight. I think my Mustang is write off. I need to buy another car now. Hopefully, I don’t get internal bleeding,” he posted.
He left without life-threatening injuries.
8. Portable has logged more than one wreck, and the most recent came with his own running commentary. In the early hours of May 7, 2026, brake failure forced him into a ditch in Ogun State so he would not hit an oncoming vehicle. He shared the aftermath on Instagram stories a day before the naming of his son, Fijabi.
“I pressed the brake, but it did not respond. I do not want to die. Ogun saved me. Nothing happened to me,” he said.
He added:
“I thank God my people did not come here to carry my corpse.”
He noted that he had already bought two cows for the ceremony.
“Thank God that the accident didn’t happen when the trailer was passing on the road.”
Earlier crashes in 2021 and 2022 had already wrecked a G-Wagon and a Range Rover.
9. Music promoter Sam Larry left hospital after a far deadlier crash. In the early hours of Saturday, July 4, 2026, the vehicle carrying him collided with a trailer on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road. The impact wrote the car off. His bouncer, Wale, also referred to in reports as Adewale, died at the scene. Comedian Mario Wazobia posted “Pray for Sam Larry” as the promoter was taken to hospital. At the time, police and LASTMA had not issued a full official account, and Sam Larry’s team had not released a statement. False claims that he had died, and later that he had lost the use of his legs, spread online. He ended that speculation on July 30, when he appeared at a wedding at Whitestone Event Centre in Ikeja, dancing and moving through the crowd.
10. Nollywood actor Rykardo Agbor, also known as Ricardo Agbor, filmed his own wreckage on September 26, 2026. His silver Lexus SUV sat in front of the Cornerstone City billboard in Ibadan with a crushed bonnet, a smashed grille, exposed engine parts and a damaged front-left tyre. Standing at the scene, he said:
“This is my vehicle in front of Cornerstone City, Ibadan. Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ.”
He added:
“This is what just happened to me now. Oh God.”
In the caption he wrote:
“Thank God Almighty I made it out of this. Thank you Lord Jesus Christ.”
He did not say what caused the crash or whether he was injured.
