Nollywood icon Stella Damasus has set a high bar for any man who wants her daughter, Angelica Aboderin, naming respect, money and discipline as qualities she will not bend on.
The actress laid out her list on Pulse Fun Facts after Angelica asked what three things she would never compromise on if she were picking a suitor for her.
“One, he has to fully respect you,” Stella said.
She doubled down on the first point in the full exchange.
“He has to fully, fully respect you. Forgive me, but I’ll say it. He has to be obsessed with you. Very much so.”
On provision, she was just as direct.
“Secondly, he has to have more than enough to take care of not just himself, but of you too.”
Discipline, she argued, is what holds everything else together.
“He has to be disciplined. You know what I mean. It’s easy to say, ‘Oh, I want him to love God. I want him to fear God. I want him to have all of that.’ But without self-discipline, without discipline of mind, body, everything, everything will scatter.”
Then came the extra condition that drew laughs in the studio.
“There’s many, many more, because you have to be good-looking as well, because, come on now. Look at you.”
Angelica is Stella’s second daughter with her late first husband, Jaiye Aboderin, whom she married in 1999 at 21. Aboderin died suddenly in 2004. The two girls later collected a posthumous award in his honour, and Stella has said they still miss him. Angelica graduated from Columbia University and has often been compared to her mother in looks.
The session was billed as a light mother-daughter Q&A, but Stella’s checklist has split viewers. Some praised her for protecting her child. Others said the demand that a man be “obsessed” and rich sets an impossible standard. For Stella Damasus, the man who wants Angelica must respect her, provide for her, stay disciplined, and still look the part.
