“We Split a Year Ago!” — Asu Ekiye Announces End of 28-Year Marriage

Popular gospel singer Asu Ekiye, popularly known as the Prince of the Niger Delta, has announced the end of his 28-year marriage to Kunemofa Asu.

The multi-award-winning artiste shared a public notice on his social media platforms on Thursday, August 20, 2026, stating that the union had actually concluded a year earlier. He explained that he deliberately waited before making the news public.

“After 28 years of a deeply personal journey of growth, experience and reflection, I wish to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to Kunemofa Asu has come to an end,” Ekiye wrote.

He continued:

“Some chapters, however significant and memorable, eventually come to an end. I choose to close this chapter with grace, gratitude and dignity, while looking ahead to the possibilities of a new season. For the avoidance of doubt, this marriage ended a year ago. I have deliberately chosen to make this announcement only now, after allowing time to bring the perspective, clarity and quiet acceptance that such a deeply personal transition deserves.”

The couple married in 1998 and share four children. No reasons for the separation were disclosed in the statement.

Ekiye rose to national prominence with his 2001 hit “Woekilemo” and has since released several well-known gospel tracks including “Eniye,” “Dey by My Side,” “Seiyo,” “Miyebibo,” “Kareyo” featuring Eben, “Ebikamo,” and “Yemiyemo.”

In a 2018 interview, the singer once described how he and Kunemofa met without the conventional dating process. He said their dreams aligned, their spirituality fused, their intellect agreed and their chemistry cooperated. He proposed to her on the street and she took two weeks to accept. At the time he spoke of her as special, beautiful, spiritual, focused, intelligent, motherly, enterprising, resourceful and a true companion.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from fans who expressed surprise at the end of such a long union while noting the mature and dignified tone of the statement. Ekiye’s message focused on closing the chapter with gratitude rather than bitterness as he looks toward a new season.
