“He Got a Car, Not a Title!” — Ooni Palace Slams Baba Ijesha’s Claim

Controversial Nollywood actor James Olanrewaju, better known as Baba Ijesha, is facing fresh embarrassment after the Ooni of Ife’s palace denied his claim of receiving a chieftaincy title, insisting he was only gifted a car.

The actor had excitedly announced on social media that the Ooni, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, honoured him and his wife, Luminee, with royal gifts including a new car and the title “Baba Awada Konge Oduwa, Ile Ife, Ile Oodua,” following the birth of their son.

However, the palace swiftly pushed back. Ooni’s spokesperson, Moses Olafare, stated clearly:

“I am not aware of the chieftaincy title, but I am aware of the car.”

He explained that the monarch is known for his generosity with vehicles.

“Kabiyesi gives cars to people. This is not the first time. He has given cars to so many people, including kings and individuals, and it is not a new thing.”

Olafare added that many have benefited, naming figures like Haruna Ishola and Sefiu Alao.

Another palace source went further, dismissing the title claim outright:

“I am not aware of the chieftaincy title… probably a joke.”

The source insisted that such formal honours are not conferred casually.

The development has ignited massive online debate, with many accusing Baba Ijesha of exaggeration or the palace of damage control following public backlash over the association. Critics have questioned the wisdom of the Ooni extending such gestures to the actor, who was convicted in 2022 for sexually assaulting a minor and released after serving part of his sentence.

Baba Ijesha’s recent marriage and fatherhood milestones had already divided public opinion. While some celebrate what appears to be a redemption arc, others remain unforgiving about his past.
