“Every Marriage Should Have Expiry Date” — Bovi

Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma has ignited fierce debate after proposing that marriages should come with a renewable five-year clause to promote greater accountability and happiness between spouses.

Speaking on the Dear Ife podcast, the comedian and actor suggested that fixed review periods would force couples to actively evaluate their relationship and address issues before they become irreconcilable.

“Every marriage should have a five-year expiry date. If the man isn’t happy, he should be free to leave. When there’s just one year left on the contract, your spouse will adjust,” Bovi stated.

He emphasised that the proposal is not designed to encourage divorce but to create structured opportunities for couples to reaffirm their commitment or part ways amicably.

“Expiry is a very powerful word but I think every marriage should be renewed, for example, every five years. Within the two families, ‘Do you still want to marry? Come and table what has been happening’,” he added.

Bovi noted that the idea could be particularly relevant in African contexts where marriage is often a communal affair involving extended families. He believes the knowledge of an upcoming review would encourage partners to be more intentional and respectful in their conduct throughout the marriage.

Bovi has previously shared views on marriage and divorce, including celebrating couples who choose to end unhappy unions rather than remain miserable.
