“Lagos Is More Expensive Than Los Angeles” — BNXN

Nigerian Afrobeats star BNXN (Daniel Benson) has sparked massive debate after declaring that living in Lagos is more expensive than living in Los Angeles, United States, following his recent relocation abroad.

In a livestream from Los Angeles, the “Outside” hitmaker expressed relief at the simpler financial demands in the US compared to the heavy burdens he faced in Nigeria.

“Lagos is too expensive abeg. Lagos is more expensive than LA.”

He highlighted that in LA, his major expense is housing, while in Lagos he constantly faced multiple financial pressures beyond just rent. BNXN noted that in the US, once rent is paid, life feels relatively straightforward, unlike the endless demands from family, friends, and fans back home.

“Aside from housing, every other thing in LA is not expensive. For instance, I am paying $12,000 monthly for my rent. Here you just pay your rent, and you’re good.”

BNXN’s revelation has divided netizens, with some agreeing that the hidden costs of living in Lagos which include constant financial requests, unreliable infrastructure, and social obligations, make it feel more burdensome. Others argued that comparing raw expenses, especially LA rents which can exceed $2,000–$12,000 monthly for certain properties, shows his statement may overlook economic realities.

The artist’s move to the US reflects the growing wave of Nigerian entertainers seeking better opportunities and peace of mind abroad.
