Veteran Port Harcourt singer Sky B has stirred emotions and heated debates online after publicly calling out Grammy-winning superstar Burna Boy for allegedly failing to support him and other pioneers who helped build the city’s music scene.
In an emotional interview on the KAA Truth podcast, the singer expressed deep disappointment over what he sees as a lack of gratitude and financial backing from the new generation of Port Harcourt artistes he claims to have supported in their early days. Sky B said:
“What is annoying me most now is Burna Boy coming into limelight and not remembering me and those who paved the way for Port Harcourt musicians.”
He went further, asserting his contribution to the industry:
“Burnaboy is supposed to support me financially or collaborate with me to rejuvenate my career.”
Sky B claimed he played a significant role in promoting the Port Harcourt sound and helped artistes like Mr 2Kay and Timaya during his active years. However, he lamented that many of them have since distanced themselves after achieving success, leaving him feeling abandoned and unappreciated.
The veteran singer suggested that regional dynamics may also influence the level of support he receives compared to artistes from other parts of the country. He maintained that acknowledgement and assistance from stars like Burna Boy would help revive his career and honour the contributions of early pioneers.
The outburst has triggered divided reactions online. While some sympathise with Sky B and agree that pioneers deserve recognition and support, many others accuse him of harbouring an entitlement mentality, arguing that no one owes another artiste financial help.
Sky B, known for hits like “Ma Bebe” in his prime, has seen limited mainstream visibility in recent years. His latest plea has reopened conversations about how the Nigerian music industry treats its veterans and the responsibility of successful artistes to uplift those who came before them.
As of now, neither Burna Boy nor his team has responded to the claims.
