Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has revealed the humble and spontaneous origin of her hit song “Beggie Beggie,” disclosing that she penned the track while riding a public bus after overhearing a dramatic exchange involving a beggar.

The Mavin Records artiste shared the story during an appearance on the Creatorium Podcast. She explained that the song, which features CKay, came to life in a very ordinary moment rather than in a studio or during an emotional high.

“I have a song called Beggie Beggie in my first album that I literally wrote like in the bus. I was going back home and just wrote it there. Somebody was begging inside the bus, and a woman said, ‘See this one, beggie beggie.”

The catchy phrase stuck with her instantly, inspiring the song’s concept and title. “Beggie Beggie,” from her debut album, became one of her early breakthrough tracks, blending emotional lyrics with an infectious melody that resonated widely with fans.

Ayra also reflected on how her songwriting process has evolved since then. While her first album leaned heavily on emotional and sad themes, she now focuses more on sonic experimentation.

“Lately for me, creating just starts with trying. Not emotion; just trying, then we see where it takes us. It may start with chords or sounds, or a specific sound I want to sample.”
