Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo used his moment of honour at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) to deliver a powerful message against xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The respected thespian, while receiving the Industry Merit Award on May 9, 2026, did not shy away from addressing the sensitive issue.
In his acceptance speech, Kanayo O. Kanayo dedicated the award to film practitioners across Africa and reflected on the sacrifices made by veterans in the industry. He stated:
“This is for Africa, for everyone who works as cast and crew. Even before 1992, many of us are no longer in good health, many have returned to their villages, and many have passed on. Sometimes, when you stand on a stage like this, you ask yourself, ‘What have I done to still be alive?’ Yes, I have made a lot of sacrifices.”
The actor also appealed to Canal+ to sustain its support for African entertainment, describing it as a unifying force amidst speculations that this could be the final edition of the prestigious award event.
“I want to extend a hand of friendship to Canal+, please keep this going. This is one thing that unites the whole of Africa.”

However, Kanayo saved his strongest words for the growing concern over xenophobia. He declared:
“On this note, I am not happy about what is going on in South Africa today. Let us lend our voices against xenophobia in South Africa. We are not happy. As Africans, we cannot continue running from Africa.”
Kanayo’s passionate plea received applause and has since gone viral, sparking conversations about African unity and the need to address recurring xenophobic violence targeting fellow Africans, particularly Nigerians and other migrants in South Africa. His bold stance at the prestigious awards ceremony reinforces his reputation as one of Nollywood’s most respected voices who consistently uses his platform to address broader societal issues.
