A conversation involving American rapper Fat Joe and Jamaican dancehall legend Buju Banton has reignited debate online after the rapper reportedly labeled Nigerian singer BNXN a “fake” during a discussion about a past naming controversy.
The now viral clip stirred up speculation of revisiting the period when BNXN was still performing under the name “Buju,” a part of Buju Banton’s name which ultimately led to his rebrand.
Speaking candidly, Fat Joe recalled how he publicly challenged the use of the name, insisting it belonged solely to the Jamaican icon.
“It was the guy in Africa, fake guy, used the Buju name… I dissed him on TV when I was hosting the Wendy Williams show.”
He went further to explain how strongly he felt about the issue at the time.
“I told him there’s only one Buju Banton, the Don Gaga… I don’t play that.”
His remarks have since stirred mixed reactions, particularly among Nigerian fans who see BNXN’s rise as distinct and deserving of respect despite the earlier name clash.
For Buju Banton, the name is beyond branding, it is deeply personal. He explained that “Buju” was not casually adopted or given by friends.
“You know, most people get their name from their friends, My name came from my mom.”
He also added that “Banton” was inspired by his admiration for dancehall pioneer Buru Banton and the Jamaican DJ culture, where the term “DJ” refers to performers who vocalize over beats rather than just play music.
According to him, the uniqueness of the name made the overlap problematic, especially in a digital age driven by algorithms.
“So when a young man came and said the name Buju… I knew the problem it poses… the algorithms start getting confused.”
The naming dispute eventually led to the Nigerian artist dropping “Buju” and adopting BNXN, a move widely seen as a strategic rebrand to avoid further controversy and identity clashes.
While some fans agree that Buju Banton’s legacy warrants protection, others argue that calling BNXN “fake” undermines his growth and contribution to African music.
